Though air travel is still one of the most environmentally efficient modes of travel, there are still challenges for the industry to do even better. For nearly five decades, CFM International has invested in technologies to make our engines cleaner, quieter, and more efficient.

CFM has introduced new technologies into mature fleets, helping customers improve fuel efficiency, lower CO2 and NOx emissions, and reduce noise, thus limiting the impact these engines have on the environment, and while also reducing lifecycle costs.
RISE

The CFM International RISE (Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines) Technology Demonstration Program was launched on June 14, 2021.

Goals include reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by more than 20 percent compared to today’s most efficient engines.


Open fan architecture:
a step change in propulsion efficiency

The pursuit of ever-increasing propulsive efficiency has driven the growth of engine fan diameter in commercial jet engines over the past five decades. This progression is ultimately leading to the open fan concept, which is currently the most efficient and sustainable option to improve engine propulsive efficiency.

To meet the initial challenges of ramping up LEAP engine production, GE and Safran Aircraft Engines leaned into the robustness of their proven CFM56 capability and expanded it with optimized processes, innovative technologies, a streamlined supplier base, and expanded capacity.

The LEAP supply chain is based on a careful selection of suppliers, including criteria such as the ability to keep pace with the ramp-up in production, while meeting quality, cost and on-time delivery requirements.

Safran Aircraft Engines and GE have invested heavily to meet these goals, including new facilities worldwide. Both parent companies have modernized and expanded their industrial facilities to meet the challenge, establishing Digital Transformation through automated lines, closed-door machining and robotics.
